Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine

THE TWO DAY INTRODUCTION COURSE WITH DR. GLASSMAN IS BACK!!!!

This unique Introduction To Dental Sleep Medicine course has been well received and recognized for it’s comprehensiveness and excellence. This is the course that many of those teaching took to start their learning experience in dental sleep medicine. The course includes a HANDS-ON portion where clinical examinations, bite registrations and appliance insertions are either performed or observed.

WHY CONSIDER THIS COURSE OVER ALL OF THE MANY COURSES GIVEN ON SLEEP MEDICINE? Level ONE, the basic introductory course to Dental Sleep Medicine, has become well known as the best introductory course available. This course gives the dentist the introduction to the practice mode that can finally provide a process that conquers the challenges created by poor patient communications at the diagnostic levels and physician bias concerning the use of oral appliance therapy in obstructive sleep apnea. Yes, we will teach the traditional concepts in terms of the patterns of practice, but Dr. Glassman’s and Dr. Viviano’s vast experience in practice management will be lead all attendees toward a path of implementation of the treatment of sleep disturbed breathing into their offices

10. Guraranteed safe learning environment that is ideal for both the dentist who wants to refresh their basic concepts and the dentist who is taking their first course in dental sleep medicine.

THIS IS THE COURSE THAT SEVERAL OF THOSE TEACHING SLEEP MEDICINE TODAY TOOK TO START THEIR CAREERS.

Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine

This is a two-day course to prepare you for immediate immersion of your practice into dental sleep medicine. The strength of the course is its focus on the challenges that the dentist faces in this exciting field that can provide great diversity to your practice and your day in the office. Not only is the science of dental sleep medicine taught in an innovative and exciting way, but the challenges of implementation in dentistry and how to coordinate our care with medicine are faced head on with honest and direct solutions. You may also have the unique opportunity to experience an ambulatory study on Friday night.

This two-day course is designed to teach the dentist the principles of sleep medicine and the role of the dentist on the sleep medicine team (14 Hours CE credit). Both Dr. Glassman and Dr. Viviano have become well recognized not only for their experience in dental sleep medicine, but for their unique teaching style that makes learning this entirely new subject matter exciting and enjoyable. The course is appropriate for the dentist AND his staff. This no nonsense approach to dental sleep medicine, minus all the dental myths that are often associated with it, leads to the potential to begin therapy without the purchase of ANY irrelevant “instrumentation” that is often associated with entrance into this critical field. Participants should be able to return to their offices fully equipped to begin to add sleep dentistry to their practices. All aspects of oral appliance therapy, handling of side effects, as well as the basics of sleep medicine including sleep architecture, snoring, UARS, apnea, and polysomnias, will be reviewed. An entire section is devoted to occlusion and bruxism, a sleep movement disorder. This allows us to put dental sleep medicine and the possible side effects into proper perspective as the crucial risk/benefit decision-making is made with our patients. It will also help you to treat your patients with joint dysfunction and pain as a result of bruxism.

The purpose of this seminar is to teach the basic principles of sleep medicine and give you the tools to become a valuable part of the Sleep Medicine Team. In addition to sleep medicine principles, you will learn the role of oral appliance therapy in sleep medicine. You will learn how to connect with the sleep doctors and sleep laboratories in your area, and how to become an integral part of the sleep medicine team by not competing with the sleep centers but instead providing them with a desperately needed alternative treatment to CPAP.

A practice management module will help you implement these procedures and insurance concepts into your practice. Most exciting, the learning curve is such that all attendees can fully expect to be ready to go back to their offices and immediately become involved with sleep dentistry. The entire tuition can be recovered by treating only two patients.

The syllabus includes the following: an introduction to dental sleep medicine, including the challenges facing the dentist while treating this medical disorder in coordination with the sleep physician and medical team; basic sleep principles; sleep disorders including sleep disturbed breathing; diagnosis of sleep disturbed breathing; how to screen patients; using home sleep studies including the MATRx for titration and post treatment documentation; epidemiology and comorbid conditions; understanding sleep disturbed breathing as part of the metabolic syndrome as opposed to purely a mechanical obstruction; treatment options with emphasis on oral appliance therapy; practice management and management of side effects of oral appliance therapy. And most importantly

THIS COURSE DOES NOT SUGAR COAT DENTAL SLEEP MEDICINE, BUT DEALS HEAD ON WITH THE CHALLENGES THAT FACE THE DENTAL PROFESSION IN THIS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT AREA OF DENTISTRY AND MEDICINE.

ADVANCED DENTAL SLEEP MEDICINE SYLLABUS

Glassman Seminar Action web res.jpg

This very exciting addition to the Course Series offered by Drs. Glassman and Viviano and the Sleep Disorders Dentistry Learning Centre provides an opportunity to the dentist who wants to continue his learning experience in dental sleep medicine.

THIS IS A UNIQUE COURSE. THE SMALL CLASS SIZE ALLOWS FOR IN DEPTH INTERACTIVE DISCUSSIONS INCLUDING CASE PRESENTATIONS — PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF PATIENT MANAGEMENT IN SLEEP AND WITH CO-MORBIDITY MANAGEMENT, AND AN HONEST LOOK AT OCCLUSION AND DEALING WITH OCCLUSAL CHANGES.

This is a two-day advanced course given once or twice a year. There will be a short review of sleep medicine principles, as well as a summary of new developments in sleep medicine, followed by an intricate and intense section on practice management, dealing with individual stumbling blocks that each attendee may have encountered. This section will address internal practice management and staff issues, as well as the difficulties of coordinating care with our medical colleagues. There will be an “implementation” section during which the practice of dental sleep medicine will be dissected from the initial visit to the insertion of appliances, including the use of ambulatory studies to guide titration. This advanced course delves into handling untoward side effects including muscle, joint and ligament insertion injuries, as well as occlusal and mandibular changes . Diagnosis, management and prevention of these untoward effects will be covered in detail. Presentations of complicated cases that involve side effects or difficult resolutions well be presented, and each attendee is invited to bring a case (or cases) to review. There is an in-depth section on bruxism and parafunctional control, as well a section on the relationship between pain and sleep. There will be an extensive review of current literature and a section on how to read and interpret ambulatory studies.

This course serves as an excellent “refresher course” and then probes more deeply into the practice of Dental Sleep Medicine. This is also an excellent to keep up with the current literature and advances in sleep medicine.

Note: This course is only recommended for very motivated staff members who have had some previous dental sleep education. This course is only recommended for those practitioners who are already practicing dental sleep medicine.

Practical TMD & Occlusion For the General Dentist

Learn how to control the forces that threaten your patient and the dentistry you do for them. And finally… the TRUTH that will remove the confusion and allow you to COMFORTABLY and CONFIDENTLY help so many of your patients!

This full two-day course uses evidenced based science to help eliminate the myths that prevent us from confidently and comfortably helping patients. We will examine the theories of occlusion and restorative therapy and critically evaluate the reality of occlusion’s role in joint therapy and pain control.

still1.jpg

This is the ONLY occlusion course you will EVER need to take! The course will provide the basic information to diagnose and effectively treat joint dysfunction and many oro-facial pain conditions. Although basic commonly used agents will be reviewed, this is NOT a course in pharmacology. Our goal is to determine how disorders occur and why they remain persistent, thereby allowing us to treat more efficiently and readily within the scope of our general dental practices.

This is a basic course in practical TMJ anatomy and physiology and TMJ dysfunction and chronic pain issues. Diagnosis and treatment of these disorders emphasizing proper control of parafunction will be reviewed.
Learn the myths of occlusion, that you will find both enlightening and exciting; things you know are true but have been told for years that aren’t, and they ARE!!!
This information is essential to all practicing dentists and will be immediately helpful in your daily practice. Learn an exciting new protocol using parafunctional control. Explore the various potentially confusing occlusal therapeutic concepts. Review diagnostically driven therapy utilizing splint therapy and supportive therapy. Explore the dentist’s role in headache therapy.

This course was previously entitled “ABC’s of TMD,” then “Tooth Wear to Migraine,” “Traumatic Occlusion and Bruxism,” and most recently, “Principles of Occlusion and Occluding.”  Not one of these titles is appropriate, nor do any even suggest the real value of this course to every dentist.

We all have had patients complain about a tooth which is painful, but for which there is no evident dental or periodontal cause. We all have had patients who experience muscle pain after a procedure, or question why their joint clicks and ask what can be done about it.  And we all have been taught concepts about occlusion and dental “interferences” that sometimes seem logical – and sometimes do not. Often these concepts cause us to treat patients in ways that make “sense” to us – in the face of evidence that does not provide the clarity that we have been taught to believe it would provide. This course will look closely at that evidence – and the truth about the key role of occlusion will be revealed.  This revelation is not only exciting, but also eye opening, and, most importantly, potentially helpful with EVERY patient we treat.

This course will review orofacial pain and neuropathic pain concepts, including the role of the well advised dentist in the treatment of headache and neck pain.   Understanding that it is nonsensical to call “migraine” a symptom of “TMD,” we will explore the incredible way a dentist can play a major role not only in migraine pain, but also all orofacial pain patterns in a real and practical way. To help attendees diagnose and treat pain patterns that don’t seem to have obvious peripheral causes, the course will focus on the important distinction between site specific acute pain patterns and chronic pain patterns. We will look at anatomy and physiology and then joint dysfunction — learn how things “get that way” and “why they stay that way,” and then proceed to understand realistic approaches to help patient with joint pain and joint dysfunction!

APPLIANCE DESIGN:

  • WHEN TO USE AN APPLIANCE?

  • WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE APPLIANCE (AND NO — IT IS NOT TO POSITION THE CONDYLE TO RECAPTURE THE DISK!!)

  • HOW TO EVALUATE THE SUCCESS OF THE APPLIANCE

  • WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF APPLIANCE USE?

  • WHY ARE NIGHT GUARDS OFTEN NOT WORN — AND WHAT IS THE MECHANISM OF THE APPLIANCE OF CHOICE?
